E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend containing approximately 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, offering the highest renewable fuel content available at Australian bowsers. With an octane rating of 105 RON, it is popular in the motorsport community and among environmentally conscious drivers with compatible vehicles. E85 availability in Australia is limited to select stations, primarily in New South Wales and Queensland where ethanol production infrastructure exists.
E85 is exclusively for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) that have been specifically engineered to handle high ethanol concentrations. In Australia, compatible vehicles include certain Holden Commodore models (VE and VF series with the 3.6L V6), some Ford Falcon models, and imported flex-fuel vehicles. Never use E85 in a standard petrol vehicle as the high ethanol content will damage fuel system components, corrode seals, and potentially destroy the engine.
E85 is significantly cheaper per litre than petrol, often 30 to 50 cents below ULP pricing. However, the higher fuel consumption (approximately 25 to 30 percent more than petrol) means the net cost per kilometre is roughly comparable. The real advantage of E85 is its environmental credentials and the higher octane for performance applications. Station availability is limited, so plan your refuelling around known E85 locations.
